Suggestions Invited for starting a Department of Medical Humanities, Social and Behavioural Sciences
Dear all,
I am working in a tertiary care teaching hospital in India which is basically following disciplined based curriculum for MBBS programme. Recently our institution has taken bold steps to reform the undergraduate curriculum by introducing a foundation course, integration of basic sciences, clinical presentations, early clinical exposure and formative assessment. I would like to take this opportunity to start a Department of Medical Humanities. I would like to request the members of this forum to throw some light / workable ideas on this.
Thanks and regards,
Dr. Z. Zayapragassarazan

RE:Suggestions Invited for starting a Department of Medical Humanities, Social and Behavioural Sciences
Thanks for your message. Great to see that there are plans to start a new department. There are a lot of factors to consider but I think one of the most important would be around
a) Generating interest and support from leadership and from faculty
b) Having a clear set of goals for the department in terms of what you might teach; how and where this will be integrated; and how it will form part of assessment.

We discuss this in relation to social and behavioural science in our Webinar (May 2018) so you may want to have a look at that.

Always happy to discuss more directly as well if you want to contact me - [email protected]

Thanks for your response.
I would like to know the activities of the Medical Humanities department being carried out in medical colleges across the globe at undergraduate level.
This will help me to generate interest in the subject and convince my fellow faculty and administrators to support me in this endeavour.
I also believe medical humanities can be brought under medical education department also.
Thanks and regards,

If it is Medical Humanities specifically then a good place to start may be contacting the editors and authors in the theme on MH in MedEdWorld.
If you are interested in social science then you could have a look at our website BeSST website
You will see the UK core curricula documents for Sociology and Psychology.
Please do get in touch if you would like to discuss further.

I am Sateesh Arja working at Avalon University School of Medicine, Curacao.

We are also in the process of developing the Humanities module in our curriculum. Recently I attended one webinar on Humanities. It gave me plenty of ideas to develop the humanities module with a lot of activities including online journal writing poems, experiences and reflections.

Thanks Sateesh. It would be interesting to know how your students respond to this and how you feel the humanities teaching relates to social science topics.

Thank you Harden. We are still in the process of developing the curriculum. We are trying to develop 15 sessions and each session of two hours. Each session we are writing with clear learning objectives and goals. We will implement starting from May 2019, and then definitely I will let you know the students’ response.
