Description: In 1993, Calman proposed changes to medical training that included reducing the training time for a consultant anaesthetist to six years. Since then, we have seen the formation and demise of the Postgraduate Medical Education and Training Board and the Deaneries. The failings of the Modernising Medical Careers program were laid bare in the 2008 Tooke report. More recently, Health Education England was involved with a junior doctor contract that triggered industrial action, and it oversees a national recruitment process that fails to recruit to many training posts.
