Rendez-Vous 2012

Rendez-Vous is a unique international event held annually. This year the conference will bring together the Wonca World Rural Health Conference and The Network: Towards Unity for Health annual conference, as well as the next NOSM/Flinders Conference on Community Engaged Medical Education, the Consortium for Longitudinal Integrated Curricula, and the Training for Health Equity Network. The overall theme of the conference is Community participation in education, service, research, and health.

Interprofessional education in practice

Interprofessional education ( IPE) comes in and out of the medical education news; many educators are still to be convinced of its benefits and probably appropriately so. This paper thoughfuly describes nine years of experience in IPE at one Scottish Medical School and although it was believed that the aims and objectives were achieved and that students leave University, better prepared for professional life, it still begs the question about its long term effects and again calls for more research.

This conference takes a holistic approach to this subject by including speakers from each of the areas that influence how medical education is developed governed and practiced medical education. AMEE Guide 59. How self-determination theory can assist our understanding of the teaching and learning processes in medical education

As another Guide in the Theories Series that explains the theories behind our medical educational activities, this Guide draws on the extensive work of psychology and psychologists in explaining motivational theory. Self -determination theory,( SDL) the authors point out, is applied rarely in medical education, but its potential is great. Through SDL the authors explain how classroom and clinical teaching and learning can be improved, and how it can be applied to develop competent and autonomous graduates.

Improving participant feedback to continuing medical education presenters in internal medicine: a mixed-methods study

Feedback is needed to improve the skills of continuing medical education (CME) presenters, but there has been little research in this area. These authors conducted a prospective, randomized validation study with qualitative data analysis that included all 317 participants at a Mayo Clinic CME course in 2009. Factor analysis of 5,214 evaluations revealed a one-dimensional model for measuring CME presenter feedback. Internal consistency reliability (Cronbach alpha = 0.94) and interrater reliability (ICC range 0.88 – 0.95) were excellent.

Layers within layers self-regulation in a complex learning environment

In this very thought-provoking commentary, the author poses the question of how we use the theories of self-regulation in such a complex environment as medical education. Although self-regulation is at the heart of the paper, it also points to the various layers of complexity and the inter-play between so many factors that have been uncovered as we attempt to improve out teaching and learning skills. If anyone considers that medical education, teaching, learning and assessment are easy, then they need to read this paper to completely destroy their original thinking.

Preparedness for practice: The perceptions of medical graduates and clinical teams

Despite years of innovative teaching and learning, new technologies for learning, extensive curriculum mapping in outcomes based curricula and a mutiple approach to assessment, we still have papers that are pointing out how recent graduates profess to being ill-prepared for practice. This paper adds to the increasing number of papers on this subject.
