GMC launches online learning disabilities resource for doctors in light of new report

The General Medical Council (GMC) has launched a new website, the GMC's Learning Disabilities website, as an online resource for doctors. The launch comes after a report commissioned by the GMC reveals that more than one in three doctors reported having seen a patient with a learning disability receive poorer care or face discrimination. Doctors indicated that they would like to see more help being given in the area with three-quarters indicating that online advice on treating patients with a learning disability would be welcomed.

Physician wins Canadian national award for dedicating career to medical education

The Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada have awarded the 2012 Duncan Graham Award to Dr Peter J. McLeod, FRCPC. Dr Peter J. McLeod, a physician and medical educator in Montreal received the award for dedicating more than 40 years to shaping training at the University of McGill and various Montreal-area hospitals. Royal College CEO Andrew Padmos, MD, FRCPC, said "Dr McLeod committed enormous time and energy to shaping thousands of young physicians". "This dedication has shaped and improved patient health not only in Montreal but across Canada".

Dr Ian Bowmer, FRCPC, Executive Director of the Medical Council of Canada, has been awarded the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada's prestigious 2012 James H. Graham Award of Merit. Dr Bowmer was awarded the award for working with drive, vision and integrity, when overseeing medical training at Memorial Universty and conducting important HIV research and shaped medical education across Canada.

RCGP recommends GP training be extended from 3 to 4 years

The Royal College of General Practitioners (RCGP), the UK's professional body for GPs has written to the Medical Programme Board of Medical Education England (MEE) to argue the case for GP training to be increased from three to four years. The Department of Health (DH) invited the RCGP to make a submission to the MEE after an extension was recommended in both the 2008 Tooke Report on the Independent Inquiry into Modernising Medical Careers and the 2012 NHS Future Forum Report Education and Training – next stage.
