An overview of SIMEC 2012 by John Dent and Trevor Gibbs

SIMEC is the official international medical education conference that brings together the Saudi Medical Education Society (SSME) established in 2004, and the Saudi Deans Committee (SDC), to present and discuss important issues in medical education in the Kingdom. This year it joined forces with the 8th Gulf Cooperation Council medical education conference to make SIMEC 2012 one of the largest ever held.

Health Secretary suggests language skills test for EU doctors planning to practice in England

Health Secretary Andrew Lansley has launched a new consultation to ensure that foreign doctors can speak English before they can practise in England. It is proposed that senior doctors who evaluate other doctors’ fitness to practice should have extra powers to ensure that any doctor working in their organisation can speak English.

Foundation Awards Funding for Orthopaedic Fellowship Programs in the US

The Orthopaedic Research and Education Foundation (OREF) Educational Grants Committee has awarded over $3 million for 94 graduate medical education (GME) fellowship grants to support orthopaedic fellowship programs offered in eight orthopaedic subspecialties—adult reconstruction, foot and ankle care, hand care, oncology, shoulder and elbow care, spine care, sports medicine and trauma care. The grants will support programmes ran by academic institutions or group practices in the United States.

RCGP successful in bid to extend GP training

The Royal College of General Practitioners (RCGP) have announced that they have been successful in their bid to extend GP training in the UK from three to four years after the Medical Programme Board agreed to the change. The RCGP recommended that all GP trainees spend a minimum of 24 months in general practice placements to ensure that the next generation of GPs are ready to meet the needs of a changing population and the practical challenges facing the NHS. To allow this an enhanced and extended four-year training programme was recommended.

$750,000 awarded to Institute of Medicine for Study of Graduate Medical Education

The Josiah Macy Jr. Foundation has awarded the Institute of Medicine (IOM) $750,000 to study the governance and financing of graduate medical education (GME). GME is largely responsible for the size and composition of the physician workforce in the U.S. But the education of doctors hasn’t kept pace with changes in health care delivery and practice. Over the past two years, the Macy Foundation has convened more than 50 national leaders in academic medicine, health policy, and medical education to help transform the GME system.
