Summary: There is a need for long term community physiotherapy based stroke care. This report considers the use and value of an innovative pilot programme which provided community stroke rehabilitation utilising student volunteers.
Description: Stroke is the largest cause of adult disability in the UK and a leading cause of mortality, exerting a high cost to country and individual (Feigin et al., 2003; Mooney, 2010). Rehabilitation is required for the majority of stroke survivors in order to achieve the best possible outcome (National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke, 2010). This report considers the use and value of an innovative pilot programme which provided community stroke rehabilitation utilising student volunteers. The aims of the pilot programme were to understand the benefits of an innovative stroke rehabilitation service for both students and patients alike.
