Summary: This research investigated the use of a serious game for teaching health professional students from various disciplines about teamwork and communications issues that might affect patient safety.
Description: Before they encounter teamwork and communications challenges in the real world, health professionals would benefit from practicing some of the difficult decision making in a safe environment. This research investigated the use of a serious game for teaching health professional students from various disciplines about teamwork and communications issues that might affect patient safety. Serious games engage the players to explore issues on their own in a safe environment, and can be an effective tool for adult learners, especially when coupled with debriefing exercises facilitated by an instructor. The study evaluated a prototype of a serious game with a small sample of students. It generated very positive feedback from the participants, and the results indicated that this method of learning had potential to be effective.
