Summary: This study, explores how faculty and residents in one residency program described teaching methods and role modelling; and based on their responses from individual semi-structured interviews and a focus group identify’s best practices occurring in a program taught at Queen’s University in Canada.
Description: The purpose of this study was to capture the actions of faculty members during a role modeling encounter and identify best practices and excellent teaching occurring in residency programs.

From 2010 to 2011, individual semi-structured interviews with 9 physicians and 1 focus group of residents were conducted in the Department of General Surgery at Queen’s University, Kingston, Ontario, Canada. Interviews were recorded, transcribed, and analyzed using qualitative methods for themes surrounding teaching and role modeling.
