Description: Interest in global health electives for medical students and residents has grown over the last decade. The Benin medical elective builds upon a memorandum of understanding between the faculties of medicine of the two countries. Since 2003, the University of Ottawa, through the Office of Francophone Affairs of the faculty of medicine, has facilitated an international elective in Benin for Francophone medical students and family medicine residents.

This paper reports the results of an evaluation of the programme from a learners’ perspective. It identifies areas of success and those requiring improvements or changes.
