Summary: The extent of training provision medical professionals receive to understand hearing loss issues is unknown. This paper suggests that training medical professionals to understand hearing loss issues should be an important component within the medical curriculum.
Description: Deaf and hard of hearing people frequently encounter difficulties communicating effectively in healthcare settings. Doctors are often unaware of the communication needs of these patients, thereby creating barriers and causing feelings of isolation and exclusion. Training medical professionals to understand hearing loss issues should therefore be an important component within the medical curriculum. The extent of current training provision is, however, unknown.

It is important that all medical students receive standardized understanding hearing loss training, making them more aware of the communication needs of deaf and hard of hearing people.
