Summary: The development of a leadership skill-set model for application to physicians at all levels of training.
Description: Leadership and teamwork are skills expected of residents and are common competency requirements of the American Council on Graduate Medical Education (ACGME). There are often many opportunities afforded to residents to apply leadership and teamwork throughout their training such as teaching and leading ward teams, but until recently, there was no published model for framing physician leadership training. Recent work at the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine (JHUSOM) has led to the development of a leadership skill-set model for application to physicians at all levels of training and in all fields. We used this skill-set model to the Johns Hopkins Urban Health (UH) residency training programs to improve overt leadership development, consistent with the ACGME Program Director’s Guide emphasizing leadership and teamwork training beyond “on-the-job.”
