This text offers wonderful insight into strategies for clinical education.  This edition includes a new chapter focusing on the use of virtual reality and game-based learning environments written by Eric B. Bauman for the University of Wisconsin - Madison.  There is a wealth of knowledge found in this text covering a broad range of topics related to not only nursing education, but clinical education in general.  The text and its editors Kathleen Gaberson and Marilyn Oermann are dedicated to continuous improvement of clinical education.

08 / 03 / 10

The mission of medical education is to produce clinically competent physicians. There are multiple players in the process who value similar endpoints but have different foci, priorities, and agendas.

08 / 03 / 10

Most multicultural training models concern the educational outcomes of individual trainees who have received digestible “units” of multicultural education or “cultural competence” training. Few have taken a critical perspective on how an individual trainee must learn, change his/her behavior, and sustain that behavioral change within a specific institutional context.

08 / 03 / 10

The health professional community has embraced the notion of "expert teams" as critical to its clinical and educational mandates. Now, how do we assess "competence" in this domain? Our orientation has been towards individual competence; but what about situations in which individually "competent" health professionals combine to form an "incompetent" team?

Simulation is becoming increasingly prominent in a rapidly evolving landscape of clinical education, and considerable resources are being allocated to it. Although widely used both for training and assessment, however, simulation often takes place without a clear theoretical framework.

This webinar will examine simulation at a conceptual level, exploring issues of realism, fidelity and access. Drawing on the Imperial group's work with hybrid simulation, the presentation will argue that simulation must be firmly rooted in the real world of clinical care.

Assessment is one area of medical education where there has been substantial progression in the last 50 years. The development of new assessment procedures and solid research around these procedures have contributed considerably to our understanding of assessment. This webinar will explore assessment from a more conceptual level. From the consistencies of the research general principles of assessment will be inferred. A distinction will be made to established assessment methods and relatively recent methods.

Every field needs new ideas in order to retain its vitality. Similarly, creativity is important for the growth of individuals and institutions. There are personal and institutional strategies to promote new approaches to learning, teaching and administrative tasks. They can work even when difficult-to-influence environmental factors have a stifling effect. Everyone has the potential to be creative, but producing innovations requires work and courage to change. This webinar will cover the following topics:
• What is creativity?

The goals of this workshop will be to provide authors (or potential authors) with a better understanding of what makes a good paper, where the common pitfalls lie with respect to writing and submitting papers, and what goes on ‘behind the scenes’ of the publication process. The potential benefits include an increased understanding of what it takes to publish in medical education journals specifically and the scientific literature more broadly.

eLearning is playing an increasingly important role and is now part of mainstream developments in medical education. There remain major tensions, however, in what we as educators provide for students and how students use technology. Both teachers and students need new competancies if they are to maximise the use of technology for teaching and learning. The emergent use of social networks and mobile and other technologies, for eaxmple, is challenging our concepts as to how students learn and our role as teachers.

Work on simulation in veterinary medicine has aroused interest at recent AMEE conferences. Sarah Baillie from the Royal Veterinary College in the UK has just been awarded the "Most Innovative Teacher of the Year" at the Times Higher Education Awards for 2009. Sarah's Haptic Cow captured the imagination of the judges. Students use the device, positioned inside a fibreglass model, to feel a model of a cow's reproductive tract. The technology can even alter the softness or surface texture - and the simulator "moos" if students apply excessive force.
