Date and time: Wed, 04/04/2012 - 16:00
Event is repeated: Please note this time is UK/BST. There is also a session at 0900 hours
Presenter: Alan Bleakley
Target population: All those interested in Medical Education
Host institution: Peninsula College of Medicine & Dentistry
Description

Due to circumstances out with our control the above webinar has been cancelled.

In spite of over 30 years’ worth of focus on teaching communication to medical students, research shows that doctors still communicate relatively poorly with patients in consultations and with colleagues in teams, and continue to show ‘empathy decline’. Poor communication in team settings in particular has led to what has been termed an ‘iatrogenic epidemic’ where patients’ safety is placed at risk. In this Webinar, we will discuss why learning communication in simulated settings may have an unintended consequence of ‘communication hypocompetence’, to suggest that instrumental models are replaced by holistic, humane practice learned in authentic settings.
